Environmental Sustainability : Our Mandate - KWSG
The Kwara State Government has disclosed that it will not relent its efforts in the provision of efficient waste management system, fostering private participation in environmental sustainability and promotion of balanced and stable ecosystem in the state.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Remilekun Banigbe gave this indication today in her keynote address, during the Kwara Green Hangout Programmme organized by an NGO, Eleven Eleven Twelve Foundation (EETF), Ilorin.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Forestry, Alhaji Babatunde Mahmud, said environmental issues have taken heavy tolls on human lives.
Banigbe who spoke on the theme: "Urban Waste Management Towards Environmental Sustainability in Kwara State", affirmed that agriculture has contributed to a larger number of environmental issues that caused environmental degradation in the global social and environmental system.
She emphasized that unless environmental conservation is effectively addressed, the issue of overpopulation, hydrological issues, Ozone layer depletion, global warming and deforestation, among others, will continue to pose severe threats to the existence of mankind.
The Commissioner stressed that the state has recorded immense achievements in terms of formation, formulation and enforcement of policies, rules and regulations on general environmental protection, industrial and domestic waste management, among others.
She noted that in order to achieve more, all hands must be on deck in the Ministry to effectively manage the dumpsite, aggressive desilting of unsanitary public drainages, and expand waste management routes.
Banigbe, however, appreciated Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his relentless efforts in putting in place a State-wide waste management programme to tackle the problem encountered, especially in waste collection and disposal within the metropolis.
Also speaking, the General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), Alh. Sa'ad Ayuba Dan-Musa disclosed that the Agency has the sole mandate of preventing and controlling any form of health hazards that can emanate from unsanitary environment.
Dan-musa explained that the office has continuously been engaged in sensitization and enlightenment programmes to inform members of the general public on the effects of health hazards, owing to indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
The agency, he said, has designed a model to tackle the issue through provision of bigger rorobins in public areas, government intervention scheme with social waste management in public areas, in addition to engaging the services of commercial waste managers to man regulated premises and other enlightened areas.
