The Kwara State Government has warned the waste contractors in the state to operate responsibly or face sanctions.
The Commissioner for Environment, Hon Abosede Olaitan Buraimoh gave the warning today during an inspection and monitoring tour to check the duties and activities of the waste contractors in the Ilorin metropolis.
She said that government had found out that the lackadaisical attitude of the evacuators is becoming unbearable hence needs proper attention for the enforcement in ensuring that the state is free from accumulated waste.
In addition, Buraimoh called for timely collections and disposal of waste from households and public places to prevent illegal dumping of waste.
“Refuse dumped indiscriminately will continue if we continue showing nonchalant attitude to work,
“The state government will no longer tolerate this act. Ours is to protect the lives of our people in the state in making sure they are not exposed to danger through littered environment. Hence, delaying to evacuate waste on time will not be tolerated", she warned.
Buraimoh, therefore, urged the waste evacuators to be up and doing in discharging their responsibilities effectively towards a clean and neat environment, adding that "there should be frequent collection of wastes to discourage illegal and improper disposal across the communities."
The Commissioner added that the beautification of the state lies in cleanliness as cleanliness is next to godliness".
Buraimoh assured the waste contractors that state government will not relent on its intervention scheme that will enhance compliance by the public to the sanitation laws.
