The Kwara State Government has called on the people of the state to remain health-conscious during and after the festive period of Sallah celebrations.

The Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Remilekun Banigbe made the call today in Ilorin during the monitoring of  environmental sanitation exercise for the month of April.

She said the sanitation exercise was a modified one due to preparations for the Sallah celebrations across the globe, stressing that as a government which is concerned about the wellbeing of the people, it became imperative for the government not to restrict people's movement so as to allow them have access to basic necessities and allow visitors coming in for the Sallah celebrations.

The Commissioner, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Iyabo Adekeye, the Management Staff and some Health Officers, explained that the modified exercise has not in any way disrupted the efficient discharge of their duties in making sure that the state remains clean.

Banigbe disclosed that trucks and compactors were on duty to dispose wastes generated during the exercise.

According to her, "this has not in any way affects the impact of the exercise as all hands were on deck with the involvement of different expertise on the field for the success of the exercise, as a healthy environment is a wealthy environment".

She commended the efforts of the Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led administration, for the proactive measures put in place, and equipping the Ministry with adequate equipment and trucks to enhance the sanitation exercise.

The Commissioner, while appreciating kwarans for their cooperation in adhering to environmental laws, appealed to them to take ownership of their environment in discharging their wastes responsibly.

She also appealed to Kwarans to avoid dumping refuse in drainages, road medians and on road side, but make use of the rorobins or wait for waste compactor trucks plying their routes for adequate waste disposal to avert any environmental hazards as the rainy season approaches.
